Bottles & Jars

Ball Half Pint Canning Jar, Aqua Blue, Wire Bail.

I think this is most likely an anniversary edition or something similar; the old-old ones that I have had seemed lighter in color than this one, and I do not remember them as having the eagle logo as seen in the picture upper right.  That being said, let me tell you that the glass is in excellent condition, but the rubber gasket has obviously seen better days; it appears to be pretty much dry rotted.  The galvanized wire bail has heavy patina, but of course is in excellent functioning condition.  The Ball logo appears on the face of the jar and on the glass lid, while the eagle encircled appears on the opposite side from the main Ball logo.  Around the throat of the jar, one side is blank and the opposing side simply says WIRE SIDE and the bottom edge reads MADE IN U.S.A. on one side and the opposite side has an A and a 3.  Between those two characters is a third character that I cannot identify; it could be R, it could be P, or it could be a symbol for something else entirely.  I am thinking that it is a 2 because the bottom of the jar has the number 77 and then A23 below that.  The jar is about 3 3/4" tall, and it is $25.00.

Burma-Shave Jar, Excellent Condition.

I am assuming this to be the 14 oz size; I'll explain that in a minute.  This is in awesome condition; no chips or cracks, no rub marks or shelf wear, and the lid is beyond belief.  Most times if you DO find one of these jars, the lid is either toast or missing entirely, and as you can see in the photos, not only is it present, but there is only the most minor rubbing to the paint, and the colors are bright and strong.  The jar stands 3 1/4" tall and is a bit less than 3 1/2 inches in diameter, including the vertical ribs.  The jar is fine ribbed all around with the exception of the clear panel in the front where Burma-Shave is heavily and cleanly embossed.  The bottom of the jar reads BURMA VITA COMPANY MINNEAPOLIS MINN. around the outer edge, and within that bordering it says MADE IN U.S.A.  14OZ  NLT   V  9 and at the top of the printing, just above the MADE IN U.S.A. is a mark that I am almost certain is the Hazel Atlas mark; the capital H with a capital A under the bar.  A very nostalgic piece in excellent shape, it is $55.00.

SOLD Glass Candy Container, Fire Engine.

I don't see any printing embossed anywhere on this glass; I think most of the information regarding maker and contents was most likely printed on the cardboard insert that would have closed the open bottom of this container when it was originally sold.  This one is the fire engine, complete with driver.  I find some roughness on the edge of one of the wheels; with magnification, you can see that it is actually some bits of extra glass, rather than chipping.  There is a straw mark under the front bumper.  All around awesome condition, it measures 4 3/4" long from bumper to bumper, is 1 3/8" wide across the front end, and is 2" tall at the center.  It is $28.00.

Cobalt Blue Eyewash Cup & Bottle, Wyeth.

This is terribly odd in its own way.  The bottle is glass, but the top is that thin, brittle sounding plastic that rings like glass when you tap it with your fingernail; most likely celluloid.  The cap is threaded to match the threads on the bottle, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is an original pair, rather than a married pair.  The cup itself says WYETH on both faces, while the bottle is unmarked with the exception of a 1 in the center of the bottom.  Both pieces are in excellent to near mint condition, with no chips or cracks, and no cloudiness.  The bottle itself stands 2" tall, and with the cup attached the whole set up stands 3 1/2" tall to the upward curve edge of the eye cup.  Very cool item, it is $28.00.

SOLD Perfume Bottle (?)  Glass Puppy.

I am saying perfume bottle because of the dark edge on the cap, and because I believe that I smell just the faintest hint of fragrance when I open the bottle.  The cap is not damaged; only that darkening that is common to the old plastics with constant contact with chemicals such as perfumes.  It may even bleach out if you want to take the time.  The only marking I find on this bottle is on the base, where it simply says PAT. PD  followed by a 3.  The seated puppy has long ears and a bow around its neck, and while the bottle could stand an intensive cleaning, it is free of damage.  It is a tiny bottle for all the detail, measuring only 2 3/4" to the top of the cap.  It is $12.00.

Koala Bear Bottle, San Diego Zoo, Candy Container?

I am thinking candy container only because I can't imagine what other purpose it would have had.  The glass is heavy and has that same stippled surface that you find on glass doors that you only want light to pass through, but not to be visibly transparent.  Somewhere along the line someone closed the jar with a Ball canning lid; it fits, but surely is not original to the piece.  Never having seen one of these, I have no idea of what the original lid would have looked like.  Around the base of the glass, as seen in the picture bottom left, it says SAN DIEGO ZOO and that is all of the markings on the glass.  Assembled as you see it in the pictures, it stands 6 1/4" tall.  It is $25.00.

SOLD Old Vaseline Jar, Quote Marks Logo.

The picture upper left does manage to show the quotation marks around the word VASELINE on this jar.  This is the small jar, measuring just under 2 1/2" tall.  There is a 1 encircled on the bottom of the jar, and the only other marking is the embossed front label, which of course says "VASELINE"  CHEESEBROUGH NEW  YORK and nothing else.  There are some bubbles in the glass itself that would not photograph; they are within the glass wall itself, with no breakthrough inside or out.  The lid has no more paint on it, but I was just happy to have the lid at all, and it still works smoothly and has no severe damage.  This jar is not common, and it is $25.00.

Hippo Size Soda Water Bottle.

This bottle is slightly cloudy; not enough to hurt the the look of it.  In person, the bottle has a very very slightly purple cast, which usually indicates the presence of magnesium in the glass, and the shape of the bottle is suggestive of the hobbleskirt shape adopted by coca cola.  This one is all about the embossing, though.  I have never seen one like it; it is HIPPO SIZE SODA WATER embossed diagonally above the waistline of the bottle on both front and back.  Above those words, we have a hippo with its mouth wide open, and it is actually nicely detailed, even though I was unable to capture those details in the pictures.  Around one side of the waistline of the bottle it says BOT. PTD. NOV. 2, 1926 ONE PINT-16 FL. OZ. and on the other side it says BOT. PTD. NOV. 2, 1926 THE BIGGEST BOTTLE FOR 5 CTS and the 'CTS' is smaller and underlined.  Moving down to the bottom edge of the bottle, it says PROPERTY OF SAN ANTONIO BOTT. CO.  SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS  Then on the bottom of the bottle, that same legend is repeated in a circle around the outer edge, and inside that circle it says HIPPO SIZE SODA WATER again, and there is a number 7 below that and what appears to be a 9 next to the S in SODA.  Below the waistline of the bottle, the lower part of the bottle is decorated with vertical convex ribs or panels, which are rounded at the top and bottom.  Outside of the slight fogging I mentioned (which may come away with a vinegar bath) the bottle is in excellent condition, with no chips; there is a very slight roughness to the top of the mouth, most likely the result of using a churchkey type bottle opener.  This truly awesome bottle is $45.00.
