Antique Japanese Worker's & Farmer's Kasuri or Ikat Cottons; Kimono Noragi, Hippari, Monpe, Mompe, Mompei & Hanten.

I've included all three basic spellings for the kasuri cotton pants in order to facilitate ease of location by the search engines. Jackets are measured lying flat.  Vertical sleeve measurements are sleeve taper or sleeve drop and should be doubled to give you the circumference of the sleeve.  Body width measurements should be doubled to give you body circumference.  Jacket lengths are measured from below the collar strip, and mompei lengths are measured from top of waist to bottom of hem.

SOLD Antique Japanese Keikogi, Natural with Indigo Musashi, K171.

Pattern: Pattern of simple Musashi stitching much like Sashiko in diamond shapes over entire coat, straight stitches closely placed at cuffs.
Comments: This is a jacket worn for Kendo practice, much lighter in weight than Kendo gi. I'm not certain about the fabric; it could be raw homespun cotton, it could be linen, it could be a cotton-hemp blend or something else yet again.

Most (not all) of the staining you see seems to be the result of something that happened while the garment was folded up. I believe that most if not all of this would come out with careful laundering. Bearing in mind that this might be old enough that the indigo thread used for the stitching might not be colorfast, you may want to go with Woolite or perhaps take it to a professional cleaner if you are not confident in your own success.

K171 $175.00
Material: Cotton or Linen or Hemp; possible blend
Condition: Very good
Color: Natural with indigo

Size:
•Length: 35"
•Width: 49"
•Sleeve: 10 1/4-6" Taper
•Shoulder: 26"

Antique Japanese Kasuri Cotton Haori, K170.

Pattern: Very subtle horizontal and vertical pattern in medium to light blue on the indigo ground. Black han-eri, solid indigo liner.  The bottom right picture best displays the color.
Comments: The cuffs are reinforced with a woven shima cotton. The build of the garment is specifically female, although the shell pattern is much like that found on men's kimono in blue. Because of the liner, this one is heavier than usual and it has indicators that it either was at some time past or that it is intended in the future to be padded as a winter hanten. The cotton has a coarseness to it that borders on being rough under the hand. Everything about this one suggests age and that it was well cared for all this time; it's more an impression that something obvious and you will understand when you have it in your hands. Very small, faint spots are nearly invisible and most likely will come out with simple laundering, the garment is structurally sound. Very unusual and a nice addition to your wardrobe.

K170 $115.00
Material: Cotton
Condition: Vintage Excellent
Color: Indigo

Size:
•Length: 30 1/4"
•Width: 45 1/2"

•Shoulder: 23"

SOLD Antique Japanese Kasuri Noragi, K169.

Pattern: White kasuri pattern woven into indigo ground. Liner is beautiful with cranes, wrapping cords, patterns and more.
Comments: Himo are present and the fabric is quite stiff, consistent with being unused or unworn following cleaning. The somewhat small shoulder (body) measurement suggests a younger adult.

K169 $85.00
Material: Cotton
Condition: Excellent
Color: Indigo

Size:
•Length: 26 1/2"
•Width: 43"
•Sleeve: 11 1/4-6 1/2" taper
•Shoulder: 18 1/2"

Antique Japanese Kasuri Noragi, K168.

Pattern: Medium blue kasuri pattern on very dark indigo ground; liner matches the ground of the shell, being either black or an idigo so dark as to appear black.
Comments: 17 1/2" shoulder (body) width suggests a small or very young adult. There is a hole in the upper layer of fabric at the side seam on the wearer's left. Fabric is very stiff from lack of wear; even though there is a hole, the garment appears to be entirely unused.

K168 $75.00
Material: Cotton
Condition: Very good
Color: Indigo

Size:
•Length: 27 3/4"
•Width: 41"
•Sleeve: 10 3/4-6 1/2" taper
•Shoulder: 17 1/2"

SOLD Antique Japanese Kasuri Hippari, K167.

Pattern: Typical kasuri pattern in white (slightly yellowing with age) on indigo ground. Old-black cotton shoulder liner.
Comments: Several carefully done mends are present; I considered listing it as Boro, but the mends are so skillfully done that they are not readily apparent. The elastic at the cuffs is old and should be replaced (or ignored, at your discretion) and the fabric is comfortably soft from much washing and wearing. Structurally sound.

K167 $75.00
Material: Cotton
Condition: Very good
Color: Indigo

Size:
•Length: 23"
•Width: 49"
•Sleeve: 11-4 1/2" taper
•Shoulder: 24"

Antique Japanese Kasuri Noragi, K166.

Pattern: Medium blue kasuri woven into darker indigo ground. The liner shows Mt. Fuji in the background and some guards or soldiers (perhaps) in the foreground. The liner seems masculine to me.
Comments: The 18 1/2" shoulder (body) width indicates the possibility that this one was made for a smaller person or perhaps a younger adult. All of the shitsuke were present and I cut them in order to be able to photograph it properly. It is almost certain that this is either entirely unused or that it was cleaned and then not worn afterward. Very stiff from lack of use.

K166 $70.00
Material: Cotton
Condition: Excellent
Color: Indigo

Size:
•Length: 24"
•Width: 39 1/2"
•Sleeve: 10 3/4-7 7/8" taper
•Shoulder: 18 1/2"

Antique Japanese Kasuri Noragi, K165.

Pattern: Typical kasuri pattern in white woven into an indigo ground. Slight discoloration in white liner consistent with aging.
Comments: Hand stitched, sleeve's cuff ends with the fabric's selvedge, rather than being hemmed. Medium soft from age and use, but structurally sound.

K165 $65.00
Material: Cotton
Condition: Excellent
Color: Indigo

Size:
•Length: 23 3/4"
•Width: 43"
•Sleeve: 10-6 1/4" taper
•Shoulder: 25"

Antique Japanese Kasuri Hippari, K164.

Pattern: Small 'windowpane' pattern that is neither checks nor plaid, but simple vertical and horizontal lines woven into a dark indigo ground. Shoulder liner is shima (stripe).
Comments: Hand stitched, small hole on front of right sleeve, medium soft from wear, structurally sound.

K164 $70.00
Material: Cotton
Condition: Very good
Color: Indigo

Size:
•Length: 25 1/2"

•Shoulder: 24 1/2"

SOLD Antique Japanese Kasuri Hippari K163.

Pattern: Small kasuri (ikat) pattern woven in white on a dark indigo ground.
Comments: Pretty carved pearly buttons at the cuffs are purely decorative; the cuff closes with a metal hook and eye. Fabric is medium soft from use and the shoulder has some discoloration associated with age.

Condition: Excellent
Color: Indigo

Antique Kimono Kasuri Shima Ikat Cotton Jacket, K154.

Pattern: Exterior pattern of shima; white woven into the indigo. Interior and exterior ties; note that the interior ties are of a different pattern from the rest of the jacket.
Comments: Medium-stiff from recent cleaning and starching. Sleeves are made to appear as though the bottom corner was drawn up and stitched to the sleeve's body to keep it out of the way while working. The collar is a short, standing collar like a "Henley" or what is sometimes called a California Collar with white reinforcements holding a single snap.

K73 Antique Kimono Haori Noragi, Green & Yellow On Indigo.

This one just about refused to be photographed.  It is really a very interesting garment having green, yellow, white and a very subtle, nearly rosy color that is visible in the picture lower left.  It still has shitsuke and the cotton is slightly coarse to the touch; perhaps hand-spun?  In any event, the inside band of the sleeve is a completely different red and indigo ikat and the whole garment is in very good shape.

Condition: Excellent
Color: Indigo, green, yellow
Size:
•Length: 34"
•Width: 49"
